Most of us of a certain age grew up with The Flintstones, the animated television series that ran from 1960-1966. With the fascination for dinosaurs and the Stone Age period, The Flintstones was popular with youngsters because it told the story of a stone age family and their friends dealing with modern-day problems and concerns.
The series was unique and fun too because of it use of prehistoric animals as household gadgets. For example, a baby woolly mammoth was used as a vacuum cleaner; an adult woolly mammoth was used as a shower; a woodpecker’s beak was used as a gramophone record and a brontosauruses’ neck raising and lowering lifts amongst others.
The show is set in the fictional town of Bedrock and features The Flintstones, Fred and Wilma and their next door neighbors and friends, Barney and Betty Rubble. Fred works as a bronto crane operator at Slate Rock and Gravel Company and in his leisure time loves bowling, pool and poker as well as finding time to coach two baseball teams. He is always looking for a get-rich-quick scheme which never seemed to work out. Wilma, his long-suffering wife, always seems to be annoyed with Fred and often punishing him when he behaves badly and picking him up after one of his schemes went wrong.
Fred and Wilma’s best friends are Barney and Betty Rubble. Barney is a very jovial and easy going personality and usually goes along with Fred’s schemes. He loves nothing more than tinkering around in Fred’s garage, playing golf, and drumming. Both he and Fred are members of the Loyal Order of Water Buffalos lodge. Betty loves to socialize especially with Wilma and enjoys shopping. She and Wilma would often volunteer to help at various charitable groups.
Fred and Wilma had one child, a daughter, called Pebbles and Barney and Betty had a son called Bam-Bam. There was, of course, Fred and Wilma’s pet called Dino, a dinosaur who acted a bit like a dog by leaping up at Fred, licking his face and yapping away.
The Flintstones was made into a movie in 1994 starring John Goodman as Fred, Rick Moranis as Barney, Elizabeth Perkins as Wilma and Rosie O’Donnell as Betty. In fact it had an amazing supporting cast with appearances by Elizabeth Taylor, Halle Berry and Kyle MacLachlan. There was a follow up in 2000 called The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas with a different cast including Mark Addy as Fred and Stephen Baldwin as Barney. Even Ann-Margret had an appearance playing a character called Ann-Margrock singing Viva Las Vegas.
The Flintstones was unique in its time and still remains a favorite with children and adults alike. Dressing in a Flintstones costume can be a family affair or fun amongst friends at Halloween or themed party. Yabba-dabba-doo folks!
